THE VILLA JUAREZ VALLEY: A PARADISE FOR MOUNTAIN BIKERS

The Villa Juarez Valley is beautiful land to practice ecoturism and Mountain Bike, specially. It has several hills with an inclination that goes from medium to high, with natural valleys and roads, rocky land containing natural grave and sand, impressive desert landscape with several cactus plants and small bushes, animals from the area such as rodents, snakes, hares, rabbits, coyotes, insects, small reptiles and squirrels.

La Laguna has nearly 360 rain freedays. Summer has an average temperature of 85°, and during the winter is 63°. That allows to practice outdoor activities, like MTB, during the whole year. The best season to do it is from September thru march, because the temperature is lower and bikers may do longer rides.

The valley is suitable for medium or high skilled bikers, because of the abundance of rocks and inclination, making them a challenging and difficult ride that requires experience in handling the mountain bike thru the path.

Mountain Biking in Villa Juárez Valley started in the early 90’s, when the boom in this sport began all around the world. The first bikers began to use existent paths created mainly for mining exploration in the region. Several groups of bikers, for example Promobike and Lerdo City Bikers started to make new paths to practice the sport, taking advantage of surrounding gaps and trying to make complete loops, having Villa Juarez town as departure and arrival spot.

About 5 years ago, a group of friends called Big Eight, formed by Cesar Madero, Carlos Villarreal, Claudio Sánchez, Luis Rodriguez (El Rosa), Fernando Humphrey, Jorge Dueñes, José Ramón Ruenes and Luis García, started to create longer distance rides, with the help of a local teacher named “El Caminante” (The Walker), since he liked to walk around the paths and had already developed 2 tracks named “El Caminante” and “Harry Potter”.

Now a days, over 100 km of single tracks have been developed, such as the “Durango Mazatlán”, the “Subida de las SS”, the “Bajada Express”, the “Gran Slam”, the “Mirador”, the “Sala”, the “Abejas”, the “subida a los Cerros Pelones”, the “Espinado”, the “Serpiente Emplumada”, the “Punta Morris”, just to mention some of them.
