La Laguna, the Cardenche Maraton de Montaña 2008 region
La Laguna is the 9th metropolitan area in Mexico. Located in Northern Mexico, it comprises 16 cities, bordering the States of Coahuila and Durango in a 18,000 square miles land, with 3 main cities considered as the Metropolitan Area: Torreón, Coahuila, Gómez Palacio and Ciudad Lerdo, Durango with a greater population of over 1’200,000.
This semidesertic area is named Laguna (Lagoon) because of the lagoons formed by the rivers Nazas and Aguanaval. The main one was named “Mayran Lagoon”. Nowadays there are dams which regulate the flow of both rivers, and the lagoons no longer exist.
